[19:28]  1 tn Heb “upon the face of.”

[19:28]  2 tn Or “all the land of the plain”; Heb “and all the face of the land of the circle,” referring to the “circle” or oval area of the Jordan Valley.

[19:28]  3 tn Heb “And he saw, and look, the smoke of the land went up like the smoke of a furnace.”

[3:20]  4 tn This is sometimes taken as a comparative: “[some of the] strongest.”

[3:21]  5 sn There is a great deal of uncertainty with regard to the specific nature of these items of clothing.

[3:21]  6 tn Aram “into the midst of the furnace.” For stylistic reasons the words “the midst of” have been left untranslated.

[3:22]  7 tn Aram “caused to go up.”

[3:22]  8 tn The Aramaic verb is active.

[3:22]  9 tn Aram “the flame of the fire” (so KJV, ASV, NASB); NRSV “the raging flames.”

[4:1]  10 sn Beginning with 4:1, the verse numbers through 4:6 in the English Bible differ from the verse numbers in the Hebrew text (BHS), with 4:1 ET = 3:19 HT, 4:2 ET = 3:20 HT, etc., through 4:6 ET = 3:24 HT. Thus the book of Malachi in the Hebrew Bible has only three chapters, with 24 verses in ch. 3.

[4:1]  11 sn This day is the well-known “day of the Lord” so pervasive in OT eschatological texts (see Joel 2:30-31; Amos 5:18; Obad 15). For the believer it is a day of grace and salvation; for the sinner, a day of judgment and destruction.

[4:1]  12 tn Heb “so that it” (so NASB, NRSV). For stylistic reasons a new sentence was begun here in the translation.

[13:42]  13 sn A quotation from Dan 3:6.

[13:50]  14 sn An allusion to Dan 3:6.

[25:41]  15 tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated.

[25:2]  16 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[25:2]  17 tn Grk “Five of them.”

[20:14]  18 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence within the narrative.
