Isaiah 18:7

Context

18:7 At that time

tribute will be brought to the Lord who commands armies,

by a people that are tall and smooth-skinned,

a people that are feared far and wide,

a nation strong and victorious,

whose land rivers divide. 1

The tribute 2  will be brought to the place where the Lord who commands armies has chosen to reside, on Mount Zion. 3

Isaiah 60:9-12

Context

60:9 Indeed, the coastlands 4  look eagerly for me,

the large ships 5  are in the lead,

bringing your sons from far away,

along with their silver and gold,

to honor the Lord your God, 6

the Holy One of Israel, 7  for he has bestowed honor on you.

60:10 Foreigners will rebuild your walls;

their kings will serve you.

Even though I struck you down in my anger,

I will restore my favor and have compassion on you. 8

60:11 Your gates will remain open at all times;

they will not be shut during the day or at night,

so that the wealth of nations may be delivered,

with their kings leading the way. 9

60:12 Indeed, 10  nations or kingdoms that do not serve you will perish;

such nations will be totally destroyed. 11

[18:7]  1 tn On the interpretive difficulties of this verse, see the notes at v. 2, where the same terminology is used.

[18:7]  2 tn The words “the tribute” are repeated here in the translation for clarity.

[18:7]  3 tn Heb “to the place of the name of the Lord who commands armies [traditionally, the Lord of hosts], Mount Zion.”

[60:9]  4 tn Or “islands” (NIV); CEV “distant islands”; TEV “distant lands.”

[60:9]  5 tn Heb “the ships of Tarshish.” See the note at 2:16.

[60:9]  6 tn Heb “to the name of the Lord your God.”

[60:9]  7 sn See the note on the phrase “the Holy One of Israel” in 1:4.

[60:10]  8 tn Heb “in my favor I will have compassion on you.”

[60:11]  9 tn Or “led in procession.” The participle is passive.

[60:12]  10 tn Or “For” (KJV, NAB, NASB, NIV, NRSV, NLT); TEV “But.”

[60:12]  11 tn The infinitive absolute appears before the finite verb for emphasis.

[61:5]  12 sn The Lord speaks in vv. 7-8 (and possibly v. 9). It is not clear where the servant’s speech (see vv. 1-3a) ends and the Lord’s begins. Perhaps the direct address to the people signals the beginning of the Lord’s speech.

[61:5]  13 tn Heb “will stand [in position] and shepherd.”

[2:65]  14 tn Heb “besides” or “in addition to.”

[15:27]  15 tn Grk “to them”; the referent (the Jerusalem saints) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[1:4]  16 tn The adverbial participle ἀκούσαντες (akousante") is understood to be temporal and translated with “since.” A causal idea may also be in the apostle’s mind, but the context emphasizes temporal ideas, e.g., “from the day” (v. 6).

[1:5]  17 tn Col 1:3-8 form one long sentence in the Greek text and have been divided at the end of v. 4 and v. 6 and within v. 6 for clarity, in keeping with the tendency in contemporary English toward shorter sentences. Thus the phrase “Your faith and love have arisen from the hope” is literally “because of the hope.” The perfect tense “have arisen” was chosen in the English to reflect the fact that the recipients of the letter had acquired this hope at conversion in the past, but that it still remains and motivates them to trust in Christ and to love one another.

[1:5]  18 tn BDAG 113 s.v. ἀπόκειμαι 2 renders ἀποκειμένην (apokeimenhn) with the expression “reserved” in this verse.

[1:5]  19 tn The term “the gospel” (τοῦ εὐαγγελίου, tou euangeliou) is in apposition to “the word of truth” (τῷ λόγῳ τῆς ἀληθείας, tw logw th" alhqeia") as indicated in the translation.

[5:13]  20 tn Grk “brothers.” See note on the phrase “brothers and sisters” in 1:11.

[5:13]  21 tn Grk “as an opportunity for the flesh”; BDAG 915 s.v. σάρξ 2.c.α states: “In Paul’s thought esp., all parts of the body constitute a totality known as σ. or flesh, which is dominated by sin to such a degree that wherever flesh is, all forms of sin are likew. present, and no good thing can live in the σάρξGal 5:13, 24;…Opp. τὸ πνεῦμαGal 3:3; 5:16, 17ab; 6:8ab.”

[5:13]  22 tn It is possible that the verb δουλεύετε (douleuete) should be translated “serve one another in a humble manner” here, referring to the way in which slaves serve their masters (see L&N 35.27).
