Jeremiah 8:10

Context

8:10 1 So I will give their wives to other men

and their fields to new owners.

For from the least important to the most important of them,

all of them are greedy for dishonest gain.

Prophets and priests alike,

all practice deceit.

Deuteronomy 28:30-33

Context
28:30 You will be engaged to a woman and another man will rape 2  her. You will build a house but not live in it. You will plant a vineyard but not even begin to use it. 28:31 Your ox will be slaughtered before your very eyes but you will not eat of it. Your donkey will be stolen from you as you watch and will not be returned to you. Your flock of sheep will be given to your enemies and there will be no one to save you. 28:32 Your sons and daughters will be given to another people while you look on in vain all day, and you will be powerless to do anything about it. 3  28:33 As for the produce of your land and all your labor, a people you do not know will consume it, and you will be nothing but oppressed and crushed for the rest of your lives.

Deuteronomy 28:39-43

Context
28:39 You will plant vineyards and cultivate them, but you will not drink wine or gather in grapes, because worms will eat them. 28:40 You will have olive trees throughout your territory but you will not anoint yourself with olive oil, because the olives will drop off the trees while still unripe. 4  28:41 You will bear sons and daughters but not keep them, because they will be taken into captivity. 28:42 Whirring locusts 5  will take over every tree and all the produce of your soil. 28:43 The foreigners 6  who reside among you will become higher and higher over you and you will become lower and lower.

Isaiah 65:21-22

Context

65:21 They will build houses and live in them;

they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.

65:22 No longer will they build a house only to have another live in it, 7

or plant a vineyard only to have another eat its fruit, 8

for my people will live as long as trees, 9

and my chosen ones will enjoy to the fullest what they have produced. 10

Lamentations 5:3

5:3 We have become fatherless orphans;

our mothers have become widows.

Lamentations 5:11

5:11 They raped 11  women in Zion,

virgins in the towns of Judah.

Zephaniah 1:13

Context

1:13 Their wealth will be stolen

and their houses ruined!

They will not live in the houses they have built,

nor will they drink the wine from the vineyards they have planted.

[8:10]  1 sn See Jer 6:12-15 for parallels to 8:10-12. The words of Jeremiah to the people may have been repeated on more than one occasion or have been found appropriate to more than one of his collection of messages in written and edited form. See Jer 36:4 and Jer 36:28 for reference to at least two of these collections.

[28:30]  2 tc For MT reading שָׁגַל (shagal, “ravish; violate”), the Syriac, Targum, and Vulgate presume the less violent שָׁכַב (shakhav, “lie with”). The unexpected counterpart to betrothal here favors the originality of the MT.

[28:32]  3 tn Heb “and there will be no power in your hand”; NCV “there will be nothing you can do.”

[28:40]  4 tn Heb “your olives will drop off” (נָשַׁל, nashal), referring to the olives dropping off before they ripen.

[28:42]  5 tn The Hebrew term denotes some sort of buzzing or whirring insect; some have understood this to be a type of locust (KJV, NIV, CEV), but other insects have also been suggested: “buzzing insects” (NAB); “the cricket” (NASB); “the cicada” (NRSV).

[28:43]  6 tn Heb “the foreigner.” This is a collective singular and has therefore been translated as plural; this includes the pronouns in the following verse, which are also singular in the Hebrew text.

[65:22]  7 tn Heb “they will not build, and another live [in it].”

[65:22]  8 tn Heb “they will not plant, and another eat.”

[65:22]  9 tn Heb “for like the days of the tree [will be] the days of my people.”

[65:22]  10 tn Heb “the work of their hands” (so KJV, NASB, NIV, NRSV); NLT “their hard-won gains.”

[5:11]  11 tn Heb “ravished.”
