1:2 to the church of God that is in Corinth, ¹  to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, and called to be saints, with all those in every place who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours. ²

Divisions in the Church

1:10 I urge you, brothers and sisters, ³  by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to agree together, ⁴  to end your divisions, ⁵  and to be united by the same mind and purpose. ⁶ 

1 Corinthians 1:31

1:31 so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” ⁷

³ tn Grk “brothers,” but the Greek word may be used for “brothers and sisters” or “fellow Christians” as here (cf. BDAG 18 s.v. ἀδελφός 1, where considerable nonbiblical evidence for the plural ἀδελφοί [adelfoi] meaning “brothers and sisters” is cited).

⁵ sn A quotation from Jer 9:24. The themes of Jer 9 have influenced Paul’s presentation in vv. 26-31. Jeremiah calls upon the wise, the strong, and the wealthy not to trust in their resources but in their knowledge of the true God – and so to boast in the Lord. Paul addresses the same three areas of human pride.
