1 Corinthians 15:34

15:34 Sober up as you should, and stop sinning! For some have no knowledge of God – I say this to your shame!

1 Corinthians 15:1

Christ’s Resurrection

15:1 Now I want to make clear for you, brothers and sisters, the gospel that I preached to you, that you received and on which you stand,

1 Corinthians 5:6

5:6 Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast affects the whole batch of dough?

1 Corinthians 5:8

5:8 So then, let us celebrate the festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of vice and evil, but with the bread without yeast, the bread of sincerity and truth.

1 Corinthians 5:1

Church Discipline

5:1 It is actually reported that sexual immorality exists among you, the kind of immorality that is not permitted even among the Gentiles, so that someone is cohabiting with his father’s wife.

1 Corinthians 3:2

3:2 I fed you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready. In fact, you are still not ready,

1 Corinthians 3:11

3:11 For no one can lay any foundation other than what is being laid, which is Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 3:1

Immaturity and Self-deception

3:1 So, brothers and sisters, I could not speak to you as spiritual people, but instead as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ.

1 Corinthians 1:13

1:13 Is Christ divided? Paul wasn’t crucified for you, was he? 10  Or were you in fact baptized in the name of Paul? 11

1 Corinthians 4:7

4:7 For who concedes you any superiority? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you received it, why do you boast as though you did not?

1 Corinthians 5:8

5:8 So then, let us celebrate the festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of vice and evil, but with the bread without yeast, the bread of sincerity and truth. 12

tn Grk “Now I make known to you.”

tn Grk “brothers.” See note on the phrase “brothers and sisters” in 1:10.

sn In this passage (5:6-8) yeast represents the presence of evil within the church, specifically the immoral person described in 5:1-5 and mentioned again in 5:13.

tn Grk “a little yeast leavens.”

tn Grk “with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.”

tn Or “someone has married”; Grk “someone has,” but the verb ἔχω (ecw) is routinely used of marital relationships (cf. BDAG 420 s.v. 2.a), including sexual relationships. The exact nature of the relationship is uncertain in this case; it is not clear, for example, whether the man had actually married the woman or was merely cohabiting with her.

sn Milk refers figuratively to basic or elementary Christian teaching. Paul’s point was that the Corinthian believers he was writing to here were not mature enough to receive more advanced teaching. This was not a problem at the time, when they were recent converts, but the problem now is that they are still not ready.

tn Grk “brothers.” See note on the phrase “brothers and sisters” in 1:10.

tn Grk “fleshly [people]”; the Greek term here is σαρκινός (BDAG 914 s.v. 1).

10 tn Questions prefaced with μή (mh) in Greek anticipate a negative answer. This can sometimes be indicated by using a “tag” at the end in English (here the tag is “was he?”).

11 tn This third question marks a peak in which Paul’s incredulity at the Corinthians’ attitude is in focus. The words “in fact” have been supplied in the translation to make this rhetorical juncture clear.

12 tn Grk “with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.”
