1 Kings 17:1-6

Elijah Visits a Widow in Sidonian Territory

17:1 Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As certainly as the Lord God of Israel lives (whom I serve), there will be no dew or rain in the years ahead unless I give the command.” 17:2 The Lord told him: 17:3 “Leave here and travel eastward. Hide out in the Kerith Valley near the Jordan. 17:4 Drink from the stream; I have already told the ravens to bring you food there.” 17:5 So he did as the Lord told him; he went and lived in the Kerith Valley near the Jordan. 17:6 The ravens would bring him bread and meat each morning and evening, and he would drink from the stream.

Job 38:41

38:41 Who prepares prey for the raven,

when its young cry out to God

and wander about for lack of food?

Psalms 145:15-16

145:15 Everything looks to you in anticipation,

and you provide them with food on a regular basis.

145:16 You open your hand,

and fill every living thing with the food they desire. 10

Psalms 147:9

147:9 He gives food to the animals,

and to the young ravens when they chirp. 11

Mark 6:26

6:26 Although it grieved the king deeply, 12  he did not want to reject her request because of his oath and his guests.

tn Heb “before whom I stand.”

tn Heb “except at the command of my word.”

tn Heb “and the word of the Lord came to him, saying.”

tn Heb “commanded.”

tn Heb “to provide for you.”

tn Heb “So he went and did.”

tn The verse is difficult, making some suspect that a line has dropped out. The little birds in the nest hardly go wandering about looking for food. Dhorme suggest “and stagger for lack of food.”

tn Heb “the eyes of all wait for you.”

tn Heb “and you give to them their food in its season” (see Ps 104:27).

10 tn Heb “[with what they] desire.”

11 tn Heb “which cry out.”

12 tn Grk “and being deeply grieved, the king did not want.”
