1 Kings 6:5-6

6:5 He built an extension all around the walls of the temple’s main hall and holy place and constructed side rooms in it. 6:6 The bottom floor of the extension was seven and a half feet wide, the middle floor nine feet wide, and the third floor ten and a half feet wide. He made ledges on the temple’s outer walls so the beams would not have to be inserted into the walls.

1 Kings 6:10

6:10 He built an extension all around the temple; it was seven and a half feet high and it was attached to the temple by cedar beams.

1 Kings 6:2

6:2 The temple King Solomon built for the Lord was 90 feet long, 30 feet wide, and 45 feet 10  high.

1 Kings 3:9

3:9 So give your servant a discerning mind 11  so he can make judicial decisions for 12  your people and distinguish right from wrong. 13  Otherwise 14  no one is able 15  to make judicial decisions for 16  this great nation of yours.” 17

Nehemiah 10:38-39

10:38 A priest of Aaron’s line 18  will be with the Levites when the Levites collect the tithes, and the Levites will bring up a tenth of the tithes to the temple of our God, to the storerooms of the treasury. 10:39 The Israelites and the Levites will bring the contribution of the grain, the new wine, and the olive oil to the storerooms where the utensils of the sanctuary are kept, and where the priests who minister stay, along with the gatekeepers and the singers. We will not neglect the temple of our God.”

Nehemiah 13:5

13:5 He made for himself a large storeroom where previously they had been keeping 19  the grain offering, the incense, and the vessels, along with the tithes of the grain, the new wine, and the olive oil as commanded for the Levites, the singers, the gate keepers, and the offering for the priests.

Jeremiah 35:2

35:2 “Go to the Rechabite community. 20  Invite them to come into one of the side rooms 21  of the Lord’s temple and offer them some wine to drink.”

Ezekiel 41:6-11

41:6 The side chambers were in three stories, one above the other, thirty in each story. There were offsets in the wall all around to serve as supports for the side chambers, so that the supports were not in the wall of the temple. 41:7 The side chambers surrounding the temple were wider at each successive story; 22  for the structure 23  surrounding the temple went up story by story all around the temple. For this reason the width of the temple increased as it went up, and one went up from the lowest story to the highest by the way of the middle story.

41:8 I saw that the temple had a raised platform all around; the foundations of the side chambers were a full measuring stick 24  of 10½ feet 25  high. 41:9 The width of the outer wall of the side chambers was 8¾ feet, 26  and the open area between the side chambers of the temple 41:10 and the chambers of the court was 35 feet 27  in width all around the temple on every side. 41:11 There were entrances from the side chambers toward the open area, one entrance toward the north, and another entrance toward the south; the width of the open area was 8¾ feet 28  all around.

tn Heb “and he built on the wall of the temple an extension all around, the walls of the temple all around, for the main hall and for the holy place, and he made side rooms all around.”

tn Heb “five cubits.”

tn Heb “six cubits.”

tn Heb “seven cubits.”

tn Or “offsets” (ASV, NAB, NASB, NRSV); NIV “offset ledges.”

tn Heb “so that [the beams] would not have a hold in the walls of the temple.”

tn Heb “five cubits.” This must refer to the height of each floor or room.

tn Heb “sixty cubits.” A cubit was a unit of measure roughly equivalent to 18 inches or 45 cm. Measurements in vv. 2-10 have been converted to feet in the translation for clarity.

tn Heb “twenty cubits.”

10 tn Heb “thirty cubits.”

11 tn Heb “a hearing heart.” (The Hebrew term translated “heart” often refers to the mental faculties.)

12 tn Heb “to judge.”

13 tn Heb “to understand between good and evil.”

14 tn Heb “for”; the word “otherwise” is used to reflect the logical sense of the statement.

16 tn Heb “to judge.”

17 tn Heb “your numerous people.”

18 tn Heb “And the priest the son of Aaron.”

19 tn Heb “giving.”

20 tn Heb “the house of the Rechabites.” “House” is used here in terms of “household” or “family” (cf. BDB 109 s.v. בַּיִת 5.a, b).

21 sn This refers to one of the rooms built on the outside of the temple that were used as living quarters for the priests and for storage rooms (cf. Neh 13:4-5; 1 Kgs 6:5; 1 Chr 28:12; 2 Chr 31:11 and compare Ezek 41:1-14).

22 tc The Hebrew is difficult here. The Targum envisions a winding ramp or set of stairs, which entails reading the first word as a noun rather than a verb and reading the second word also not as a verb, supposing that an initial mem has been read as vav and nun. See D. I. Block, Ezekiel (NICOT), 2:549.

23 tn The Hebrew term occurs only here in the OT.

24 tn Heb “reed.”

25 tn Heb “six cubits” (i.e., 3.15 meters).
