1 Kings 8:18

8:18 The Lord told my father David, ‘It is right for you to have a strong desire to build a temple to honor me.

1 Kings 8:2

8:2 All the men of Israel assembled before King Solomon during the festival in the month Ethanim (the seventh month).

1 Kings 6:8

6:8 The entrance to the bottom level of side rooms was on the south side of the temple; stairs went up to the middle floor and then on up to the third floor.

Matthew 25:21

25:21 His master answered, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave! You have been faithful in a few things. I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master.’

Matthew 25:3

25:3 When the foolish ones took their lamps, they did not take extra olive oil 10  with them.

Matthew 1:5-8

1:5 Salmon the father of Boaz (by Rahab), Boaz the father of Obed (by Ruth), Obed the father of Jesse, 1:6 and Jesse the father of David the king.

David was the father of Solomon (by the wife of Uriah 11 ), 1:7 Solomon the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asa, 12  1:8 Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, Joram the father of Uzziah,

tn Heb “Because it was with your heart to build a house for my name, you did well that it was with your heart.”

sn The festival. This was the Feast of Tabernacles, see Lev 23:34.

sn The month Ethanim. This would be September-October in modern reckoning.

tc The Hebrew text has “middle,” but the remainder of the verse suggests this is an error.

tn Heb “by stairs they went up.” The word translated “stairs” occurs only here. Other options are “trapdoors” or “ladders.”

tc The translation reads with a few medieval Hebrew mss, the Syriac Peshitta, and Vulgate הַשְּׁלִשִׁית (hashÿlishit, “the third”) rather than MT הַשְּׁלִשִׁים (hashÿlishim, “the thirty”).

tn Grk “His master said to him.”

tn Grk “For when.” Here γάρ (gar) has not been translated.

tn The word “extra” is not in the Greek text but is implied. The point is that the five foolish virgins had only the oil in their lamps, but took along no extra supply from which to replenish them. This is clear from v. 8, where the lamps of the foolish virgins are going out because they are running out of oil.

10 tn On the use of olive oil in lamps, see L&N 6.202.

11 sn By the wife of Uriah, i.e., Bathsheba (cf. 2 Sam 11:3).

12 tc The reading ᾿Ασάφ (Asaf), a variant spelling on ᾿Ασά (Asa), is found in the earliest and most widespread witnesses (Ì1vid א B C [Dluc] Ë1,13 700 pc it co). Although Asaph was a psalmist and Asa was a king, it is doubtful that the author mistook one for the other since other ancient documents have variant spellings on the king’s name (such as “Asab,” “Asanos,” and “Asaph”). Thus the spelling ᾿Ασάφ that is almost surely found in the original of Matt 1:7-8 has been translated as “Asa” in keeping with the more common spelling of the king’s name.
