1 Kings 8:2

8:2 All the men of Israel assembled before King Solomon during the festival in the month Ethanim (the seventh month).

1 Kings 1:6

1 Kings 7:5

7:5 All of the entrances were rectangular in shape and they were arranged in sets of three.

Should I give him my firstborn child as payment for my rebellion,

tn Or “tokens of peace”; NIV, TEV “fellowship offerings.”

sn The festival. This was the Feast of Tabernacles, see Lev 23:34.

sn The month Ethanim. This would be September-October in modern reckoning.

tn Or “disciplined.”

tn Heb “did not correct him from his days.” The phrase “from his days” means “from his earliest days,” or “ever in his life.” See GKC 382 §119.w, n. 2.

tn Heb “and she gave birth to him after Absalom.” This does not imply they had the same mother; Absalom’s mother was Maacah, not Haggith (2 Sam 3:4).

tn Heb “all of the doors and doorposts.”

sn Rectangular in shape. That is, rather than arched.

tn Heb “and all the entrances and the doorposts [had] four frames, and in front of opening to opening three times” (the precise meaning of the description is uncertain).

10 sn SummonNathan. Nathan must have left the room when Bathsheba reentered.

11 tn Heb “the king.”

12 tn The plural form is used in the Hebrew text to indicate honor and authority.

13 tn Heb “mount Solomon my son on the mule that belongs to me and take him down to Gihon.”

14 tn Or “designate” (i.e., by anointing with oil).

15 tn Or “commanded.”

16 tn The words “for a sacrifice” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

17 sn The point is that not even the Lebanon forest could supply enough wood and animals for an adequate sacrifice to the Lord.

18 sn With what should I enter the Lord’s presence? The prophet speaks again, playing the role of an inquisitive worshiper who wants to know what God really desires from his followers.

19 tn The words “with what” do double duty in the parallelism and are supplied in the second line of the translation for clarification.

20 tn Or “the exalted God.”

21 tn Heb “the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul.” The Hebrew term נֶפֶשׁ (nefesh) is often translated “soul,” but the word usually refers to the whole person; here “the sin of my soul” = “my sin.”
