16:1 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long do you intend to mourn for Saul? I have rejected him as king over Israel. 4 Fill your horn with olive oil and go! I am sending you to Jesse in Bethlehem, 5 for I have selected a king for myself from among his sons.” 6
16:12 So Jesse had him brought in. 7 Now he was ruddy, with attractive eyes and a handsome appearance. The Lord said, “Go and anoint him. This is the one!”
78:70 He chose David, his servant,
and took him from the sheepfolds.
78:71 He took him away from following the mother sheep, 8
and made him the shepherd of Jacob, his people,
and of Israel, his chosen nation. 9
78:72 David 10 cared for them with pure motives; 11
he led them with skill. 12
89:19 Then you 13 spoke through a vision to your faithful followers 14 and said:
“I have energized a warrior; 15
I have raised up a young man 16 from the people.
89:20 I have discovered David, my servant.
With my holy oil I have anointed him as king. 17
1 tn This verb form, as well as the one that follows (“appointed”), indicates completed action from the standpoint of the speaker. This does not necessarily mean that the Lord had already conducted his search and made his choice, however. The forms may be used for rhetorical effect to emphasize the certainty of the action. The divine search for a new king is as good as done, emphasizing that the days of Saul’s dynasty are numbered.

19 sn The expression raised up refers here to making someone king. There is a wordplay here: “raising up” refers to bringing someone onto the scene of history, but it echoes with the parallel to Jesus’ resurrection.
20 tn Grk “about whom.” The relative pronoun (“whom”) was replaced by the pronoun “him” and a new sentence was begun in the translation at this point to improve the English style, due to the length of the sentence in Greek. The verb εἶπεν (eipen) has not been translated (literally “he said testifying”) because it is redundant when combined with the participle μαρτυρήσας (marturhsa", “testifying”). Instead the construction of verb plus participle has been translated as a single English verb (“testified”).
