25:26 “Now, my lord, as surely as the Lord lives and as surely as you live, it is the Lord who has kept you from shedding blood and taking matters into your own hands. Now may your enemies and those who seek to harm my lord be like Nabal.
27:1 David thought to himself, 1 “One of these days I’m going to be swept away by the hand of Saul! There is nothing better for me than to escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will despair of searching for me through all the territory of Israel and I will escape from his hand.”
27:2 So David left and crossed over to King Achish son of Maoch of Gath accompanied by his six hundred men.
2:2 No one is holy 4 like the Lord!
There is no one other than you!
There is no rock 5 like our God!
2:4 The bows of warriors are shattered,
but those who stumble find their strength reinforced.
2:6 The Lord both kills and gives life;
he brings down to the grave 6 and raises up.
1 tn Heb “said to his heart.”
2 tn Heb “what Amalek did to Israel, how he placed against him.”
3 tn Heb “he”; the referent (Israel) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
4 sn In this context God’s holiness refers primarily to his sovereignty and incomparability. He is unique and distinct from all other so-called gods.
5 tn The LXX has “and there is none righteous like our God.” The Hebrew term translated “rock” refers to a rocky cliff where one can seek refuge from enemies. Here the metaphor depicts God as a protector of his people. Cf. TEV “no protector like our God”; CEV “We’re safer with you than on a high mountain.”
6 tn Heb “Sheol”; NAB “the nether world”; CEV “the world of the dead.”
