¹ tn Grk “For our exhortation.” Paul here uses παράκλησις (paraklhsis) to speak in broad terms about his preaching of the gospel, in which he urges or appeals to people to respond to God’s salvation (cf. the verb form παρακαλοῦντος [parakalounto"] in 2 Cor 5:20).

² tn Grk “[is] not” (the verb “to be” is implied in the Greek construction).

⁴ tn Or “clear,” “evident.”

⁵ sn Greediness refers to an increasing desire for more and more. The point is that sinful passions and desires are never satisfied.

⁶ tn Or “meekness.” The word is often used in Hellenistic Greek of the merciful execution of justice on behalf of those who have no voice by those who are in a position of authority (Matt 11:29; 21:5).

⁷ tn Or “putting up with”; or “forbearing.”

⁸ tn Grk “so that we might walk in them” (or “by them”).
