2 Chronicles 18:21-22

2 Chronicles 36:16

36:16 But they mocked God’s messengers, despised his warnings, ⁵  and ridiculed his prophets. ⁶  Finally the Lord got very angry at his people and there was no one who could prevent his judgment. ⁷ 

¹ tn Heb “As for the events of Rehoboam, the former and the latter, are they not written?”

² tn Heb “he”; the referent (the Lord) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

³ tn The Hebrew text has two imperfects connected by וְגַם (vÿgam). These verbs could be translated as specific futures, “you will deceive and also you will prevail,” in which case the Lord is assuring the spirit of success on his mission. However, in a commissioning context (note the following imperatives) such as this, it is more likely that the imperfects are injunctive, in which case one could translate, “Deceive, and also overpower.”

³ tn Heb “and the rest of the deeds of Hezekiah and his faithful acts, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah son of Amoz the prophet upon the scroll of the kings of Judah and Israel.”

⁴ tn Heb “his words.”

⁵ tn All three verbal forms (“mocked,” “despised,” and “ridiculed”) are active participles in the Hebrew text, indicating continual or repeated action. They made a habit of rejecting God’s prophetic messengers.

⁶ tn Heb “until the anger of the Lord went up against his people until there was no healer.”
