Cyrus Allows the Exiles to Go Home

36:22 In the first year of the reign of ⁹  King Cyrus of Persia, in fulfillment of the promise he delivered through Jeremiah, ¹⁰  the Lord moved ¹¹  King Cyrus of Persia to issue a written decree throughout his kingdom.

¹ tn Heb “now a man drew a bow in his innocence” (i.e., with no specific target in mind, or at least without realizing his target was the king of Israel).

² tn Heb “he”; the referent (the king) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

⁴ tn Heb “the gods of Damascus, the ones who had defeated him.” The words “he thought” are supplied in the translation for clarification. The perspective is that of Ahaz, not the narrator! Another option is that “the kings” has been accidentally omitted after “gods of.” See v. 23b.

⁷ tn Heb “don’t stiffen your neck” (a Hebrew idiom for being stubborn).
