The Building of the Temple

3:1 Solomon began building the Lord’s temple in Jerusalem ¹  on Mount Moriah, where the Lord had appeared to his father David. This was the place that David prepared at the threshing floor of Ornan ²  the Jebusite.

2 Chronicles 6:30

6:30 then listen from your heavenly dwelling place, forgive their sin, ³  and act favorably toward each one based on your evaluation of their motives. ⁴  (Indeed you are the only one who can correctly evaluate the motives of all people.) ⁵ 

2 Chronicles 32:12

32:12 Hezekiah is the one who eliminated ⁶  the Lord’s ⁷  high places and altars and then told Judah and Jerusalem, “At one altar you must worship and offer sacrifices.”

2 Chronicles 33:3

33:3 He rebuilt the high places that his father Hezekiah had destroyed; he set up altars for the Baals and made Asherah poles. He bowed down to all the stars in the sky ⁸  and worshiped ⁹  them.

2 Chronicles 34:24

34:24 “This is what the Lord says: ‘I am about to bring disaster on this place and its residents, the details of which are recorded in the scroll which they read before the king of Judah.

² tn In 2 Sam 24:16 this individual is called אֲרַוְנָא (“Aravna”; traditionally “Araunah”). The form of the name found here also occurs in 1 Chr 21:15; 18-28.

⁴ tn Heb “and act and give to each one according to all his ways because you know his heart.” In the Hebrew text vv. 28-30a actually contain one lengthy conditional sentence, which the translation has divided up for stylistic reasons.

⁷ tn The phrase כָל צְבָא הֲַשָּׁמַיִם (khol tsÿva’ hashamayim), traditionally translated “all the host of heaven,” refers to the heavenly lights, including stars and planets. In 1 Kgs 22:19 these heavenly bodies are pictured as members of the Lord’s royal court or assembly, but many other texts view them as the illegitimate objects of pagan and Israelite worship.
