36:15 The Lord God of their ancestors 2 continually warned them through his messengers, 3 for he felt compassion for his people and his dwelling place. 36:16 But they mocked God’s messengers, despised his warnings, 4 and ridiculed his prophets. 5 Finally the Lord got very angry at his people and there was no one who could prevent his judgment. 6 36:17 He brought against them the king of the Babylonians, who slaughtered 7 their young men in their temple. 8 He did not spare 9 young men or women, or even the old and aging. God 10 handed everyone over to him. 36:18 He carried away to Babylon all the items in God’s temple, whether large or small, as well as what was in the treasuries of the Lord’s temple and in the treasuries of the king and his officials. 36:19 They burned down the Lord’s temple and tore down the wall of Jerusalem. 11 They burned all its fortified buildings and destroyed all its valuable items. 36:20 He deported to Babylon all who escaped the sword. They served him and his sons until the Persian kingdom rose to power.

5:4 What more can I do for my vineyard
beyond what I have already done?
When I waited for it to produce edible grapes,
why did it produce sour ones instead?
5:5 Now I will inform you
what I am about to do to my vineyard:
I will remove its hedge and turn it into pasture, 21
I will break its wall and allow animals to graze there. 22
5:6 I will make it a wasteland;
no one will prune its vines or hoe its ground, 23
and thorns and briers will grow there.
I will order the clouds
not to drop any rain on it.
6:19 Hear this, you peoples of the earth: 24
‘Take note! 25 I am about to bring disaster on these people.
It will come as punishment for their scheming. 26
For they have paid no attention to what I have said, 27
and they have rejected my law.
