Elisha Helps a Widow and Her Sons

4:1 Now a wife of one of the prophets ²  appealed ³  to Elisha for help, saying, “Your servant, my husband is dead. You know that your servant was a loyal follower of the Lord. ⁴  Now the creditor is coming to take away my two boys to be his servants.”

2 Kings 8:1

Elisha Again Helps the Shunammite Woman

8:1 Now Elisha advised the woman whose son he had brought back to life, “You and your family should go and live somewhere else for a while, ⁵  for the Lord has decreed that a famine will overtake the land for seven years.”

2 Kings 9:11

9:11 When Jehu rejoined ⁶  his master’s servants, they ⁷  asked him, “Is everything all right? ⁸  Why did this madman visit you?” He replied, “Ah, it’s not important. You know what kind of man he is and the kinds of things he says.” ⁹

2 Kings 10:13

10:13 Jehu encountered ¹¹  the relatives ¹²  of King Ahaziah of Judah. He asked, “Who are you?” They replied, “We are Ahaziah’s relatives. We have come down to see how ¹³  the king’s sons and the queen mother’s sons are doing.”

2 Kings 19:10

19:10 “Tell King Hezekiah of Judah this: ‘Don’t let your God in whom you trust mislead you when he says, “Jerusalem will not be handed over ¹⁴  to the king of Assyria.”

2 Kings 20:1

Hezekiah is Healed

20:1 In those days Hezekiah was stricken with a terminal illness. ¹⁵  The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz visited him and told him, “This is what the Lord says, ‘Give your household instructions, for you are about to die; you will not get well.’” ¹⁶ 

¹ tn Heb “Is it because there is no God in Israel [that] you are going to inquire of Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron?” The translation seeks to bring out the sarcastic tone of the rhetorical question.

² tn Heb “a wife from among the wives of the sons of the prophets.”

³ tn Or “cried out.”

⁴ tn Heb “your servant feared the Lord.” “Fear” refers here to obedience and allegiance, the products of healthy respect for the Lord’s authority.

³ tn Heb “Get up and go, you and your house, and live temporarily where you can live temporarily.”

⁵ tc The MT has the singular, “he said,” but many witnesses correctly read the plural.

⁶ tn Heb “Is there peace?”

⁷ tn Heb “He said, ‘You, you know the man and his thoughts.’” Jehu tries to deflect their question by reminding them that the man is an eccentric individual who says strange things. His reply suggests that the man said nothing of importance. The translation seeks to bring out the tone and intent of Jehu’s reply.
