Elisha Helps a Widow and Her Sons

4:1 Now a wife of one of the prophets ¹  appealed ²  to Elisha for help, saying, “Your servant, my husband is dead. You know that your servant was a loyal follower of the Lord. ³  Now the creditor is coming to take away my two boys to be his servants.”

2 Kings 5:8

5:8 When Elisha the prophet ⁴  heard that the king had torn his clothes, he sent this message to the king, “Why did you tear your clothes? Send him ⁵  to me so he may know there is a prophet in Israel.”

2 Kings 8:1

Elisha Again Helps the Shunammite Woman

8:1 Now Elisha advised the woman whose son he had brought back to life, “You and your family should go and live somewhere else for a while, ⁶  for the Lord has decreed that a famine will overtake the land for seven years.”

2 Kings 9:26

9:26 ‘“Know for sure that I saw the shed blood of Naboth and his sons yesterday,” says the Lord, “and that I will give you what you deserve right here in this plot of land,” ⁷  says the Lord.’ So now pick him up and throw him into this plot of land, just as the Lord said.” ⁸ 

2 Kings 17:26

17:26 The king of Assyria was told, ⁹  “The nations whom you deported and settled in the cities of Samaria do not know the requirements of the God of the land, so he has sent lions among them. They are killing the people ¹⁰  because they do not know the requirements of the God of the land.”

2 Kings 23:17

23:17 He asked, “What is this grave marker I see?” The men from the city replied, “It’s the grave of the prophet ¹¹  who came from Judah and foretold these very things you have done to the altar of Bethel.”

¹ tn Heb “a wife from among the wives of the sons of the prophets.”

² tn Or “cried out.”

³ tn Heb “your servant feared the Lord.” “Fear” refers here to obedience and allegiance, the products of healthy respect for the Lord’s authority.

⁴ tn Heb “man of God” (also in vv. 15, 20).

⁷ tn Heb “Get up and go, you and your house, and live temporarily where you can live temporarily.”

¹³ tn Heb “and they said to the king of Assyria, saying.” The plural subject of the verb is indefinite.
