2 Samuel 11:1

David Commits Adultery with Bathsheba

11:1 In the spring of the year, at the time when kings ¹  normally conduct wars, ²  David sent out Joab with his officers ³  and the entire Israelite army. ⁴  They defeated the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed behind in Jerusalem. ⁵ 

2 Samuel 12:9

12:9 Why have you shown contempt for the word of the Lord by doing evil in my ⁶  sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and you have taken his wife as your own! ⁷  You have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.

2 Samuel 12:31

12:31 He removed ⁸  the people who were in it and made them do hard labor with saws, iron picks, and iron axes, putting them to work at the brick kiln. This was his policy ⁹  with all the Ammonite cities. Then David and all the army returned to Jerusalem. ¹⁰ 

2 Samuel 13:28

13:28 Absalom instructed his servants, “Look! When Amnon is drunk ¹¹  and I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon down,’ kill him then and there. Don’t fear! Is it not I who have given you these instructions? Be strong and courageous!” ¹² 

2 Samuel 19:37

19:37 Let me ¹³  return so that I may die in my own city near the grave of my father and my mother. But look, here is your servant Kimham. Let him cross over with my lord the king. Do for him whatever seems appropriate to you.”

¹ tc Codex Leningrad (B19A), on which BHS is based, has here “messengers” (הַמַּלְאכִים, hammal’khim), probably as the result of contamination from the occurrence of that word in v. 4. The present translation follows most Hebrew mss and the ancient versions, which read “kings” (הַמֶּלָאכִים, hammela’kim).
