tc The translation follows many medieval Hebrew mss in reading חֵלֶד (kheled; cf. NAB, NIV, NLT) rather than the MT חֵלֶב (khelev).

tn Heb “the anointed one of the God of Jacob.”

tn Or “pleasant.”

tn Heb “he said.” The referent (the Lord) has been specified in the translation for clarity and for stylistic reasons.

tc Codex Leningrad (B19A), on which BHS is based, has here “messengers” (הַמַּלְאכִים, hammalkhim), probably as the result of contamination from the occurrence of that word in v. 4. The present translation follows most Hebrew mss and the ancient versions, which read “kings” (הַמֶּלָאכִים, hammelakim).

tn Heb “go out.”

tn Heb “and his servants with him.”

tn Heb “all Israel.”

tn The disjunctive clause contrasts David’s inactivity with the army’s activity.

10 tn Heb “men of the people of Israel.”

11 tn The words “was as follows” are not in the Hebrew text but are used in the translation for clarity.
