Acts 24:25

24:25 While Paul was discussing righteousness, self-control, and the coming judgment, Felix became frightened and said, “Go away for now, and when I have an opportunity, I will send for you.”

Acts 24:1

The Accusations Against Paul

24:1 After five days the high priest Ananias came down with some elders and an attorney named Tertullus, and they 10  brought formal charges 11  against Paul to the governor.

Colossians 1:25

1:25 I became a servant of the church according to the stewardship 12  from God – given to me for you – in order to complete 13  the word of God,

Titus 1:8

1:8 Instead he must be hospitable, devoted to what is good, sensible, upright, devout, and self-controlled.

Titus 2:2

2:2 Older men are to be temperate, dignified, self-controlled, 14  sound in faith, in love, and in endurance. 15

tn Grk “he”; the referent (Paul) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

tn Or “speaking about.”

tn Grk “and self-control.” This καί (kai) has not been translated since English normally uses a coordinating conjunction only between the last two elements in a series of three or more.

sn See the note on Felix in 23:26.

tn Grk “becoming.” The participle γενόμενος (genomenos) has been translated as a finite verb due to requirements of contemporary English style.

tn Or “when I find time.” BDAG 639 s.v. μεταλαμβάνω 2 has “καιρὸν μ. have an opportunity = find time…Ac 24:25.”

sn Ananias was in office from a.d. 47-59.

tn The term refers to a professional advocate (BDAG 905 s.v. ῥήτωρ).

tn Grk “an attorney, a certain Tertullus.”

10 tn Grk “who” (plural). Because in English the relative pronoun “who” could be understood to refer only to the attorney Tertullus and not to the entire group, it has been replaced with the third person plural pronoun “they.” “And” has been supplied to provide the connection to the preceding clause.

11 tn BDAG 326 s.v. ἐμφανίζω 3 has “. τινὶ κατά τινος bring formal charges against someone…Ac 24:1; 25:2.”

12 tn BDAG 697 s.v. οἰκονομία 1.b renders the term here as “divine office.”

13 tn See BDAG 828 s.v. πληρόω 3. The idea here seems to be that the apostle wants to “complete the word of God” in that he wants to preach it to every person in the known world (cf. Rom 15:19). See P. T. O’Brien, Colossians, Philemon (WBC), 82.

14 tn Or “sensible.”

15 sn Temperate…in endurance. See the same cluster of virtues in 1 Thess 1:3 and 1 Cor 13:13.
