22:22 The crowd ¹  was listening to him until he said this. ²  Then ³  they raised their voices and shouted, ⁴  “Away with this man ⁵  from the earth! For he should not be allowed to live!” ⁶ 

Luke 23:21-23

23:21 But they kept on shouting, ⁷  “Crucify, crucify ⁸  him!” 23:22 A third time he said to them, “Why? What wrong has he done? I have found him guilty ⁹  of no crime deserving death. ¹⁰  I will therefore flog ¹¹  him and release him.” 23:23 But they were insistent, ¹²  demanding with loud shouts that he be crucified. And their shouts prevailed.

¹ tn Grk “They were listening”; the referent (the crowd) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

² tn Grk “until this word.”

³ tn Grk “And.” To indicate the logical sequence, καί (kai) has been translated as “then” here.

⁶ tn BDAG 491 s.v. καθήκω has “to be appropriate, come/reach to, be proper/fitting…Usu. impers. καθήκει it comes (to someone)…foll. by acc. and inf….οὐ καθῆκεν αὐτὸν ζῆν he should not be allowed to live Ac 22:22.”

⁷ tn Grk “shouting, saying.” The participle λέγοντες (legontes) is redundant and has not been translated here.

⁸ tn This double present imperative is emphatic.

⁹ tn Grk “no cause of death I found in him.”

¹⁰ sn The refrain of innocence comes once again. Pilate tried to bring some sense of justice, believing Jesus had committed no crime deserving death.
