Acts 17:21

¹ tn Grk “answered and said to them.”

² tn Grk “hear,” but the idea of “hear and obey” or simply “obey” is frequently contained in the Greek verb ἀκούω (akouw; see L&N 36.14).

³ tn Grk “to what was being said by Philip,” a passive construction that has been changed to active voice in the translation.

⁴ tn Here the following context indicates the miraculous nature of the signs mentioned. This term appears 13 times in Acts, but only twice more after Acts 8:13 (i.e., 14:3; 15:12).

⁵ tn The imperfect verb ηὐκαίρουν (hukairoun) has been translated as a customary or habitual imperfect.

⁶ tn BDAG 406-7 s.v. εὐκαιρέω has “used to spend their time in nothing else than telling Ac 17:21.”

⁷ sn This is a parenthetical note by the author. The reference to newness may be pejorative.
