Ephesians 4:30

4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

¹ tn Grk “and.” The context, however, indicates that the conjunction carries an adversative force.

² sn They were not able to resist. This represents another fulfillment of Luke 12:11-12; 21:15.

³ tn The Hebrew expression here is elliptical. The words “your kindness” are not included in the Hebrew text, but have been supplied in the translation for clarity.

⁴ tn Heb “did not give ear to.”

⁵ tn Heb “the peoples of the lands.”

⁶ tn Or “grieved, hurt the feelings of.”

⁷ sn The phrase “holy Spirit” occurs in the OT only here (in v. 11 as well) and in Ps 51:11 (51:13 HT), where it is associated with the divine presence.
