13:14 You must investigate thoroughly and inquire carefully. If it is indeed true that such a disgraceful thing is being done among you,

Job 29:16

29:16 I was a father to the needy,

and I investigated the case of the person I did not know;

John 7:51

7:51 “Our law doesn’t condemn a man unless it first hears from him and learns what he is doing, does it?”

tc Theodotian adds “in Israel,” perhaps to broaden the matter beyond the local village.

sn The word “father” does not have a wide range of meanings in the OT. But there are places that it is metaphorical, especially in a legal setting like this where the poor need aid.

tn Grk “judge.”

tn Grk “knows.”

tn Questions prefaced with μή (mh) in Greek anticipate a negative answer. This can sometimes be indicated by using a “tag” at the end in English (here the tag is “does it?”).
