Events at Horeb

1:6 The Lord our God spoke to us at Horeb and said, “You have stayed ¹  in the area of this mountain long enough.

¹ tn Heb “lived”; “dwelled.”

² tn The Hebrew verb נְבֹנִים (nÿvonim, from בִּין [bin]) is a Niphal referring to skill or intelligence (see T. Fretheim, NIDOTTE 1:652-53).

³ sn Wadi Zered. Now known as Wadi el-H£esa, this valley marked the boundary between Moab to the north and Edom to the south.

⁴ tn Heb “we crossed the Wadi Zered.” This has been translated as “we did so” for stylistic reasons, to avoid redundancy.

⁴ tn The words “I say this” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons. In the Hebrew text v. 16 is subordinated to “Be careful” in v. 15, but this makes for an unduly long sentence in English.

⁶ tn Heb “Watch yourselves lest your heart turns and you turn aside and serve other gods and bow down to them.”
