Deuteronomy 12:10

12:10 When you do go across the Jordan River ¹  and settle in the land he ²  is granting you as an inheritance and you find relief from all the enemies who surround you, you will live in safety. ³ 

Deuteronomy 3:20

3:20 You must fight ⁴  until the Lord gives your countrymen victory ⁵  as he did you and they take possession of the land that the Lord your God is giving them on the other side of the Jordan River. Then each of you may return to his own territory that I have given you.”

Deuteronomy 5:14

5:14 but the seventh day is the Sabbath ⁶  of the Lord your God. On that day you must not do any work, you, your son, your daughter, your male slave, your female slave, your ox, your donkey, any other animal, or the foreigner who lives with you, ⁷  so that your male and female slaves, like yourself, may have rest.

Deuteronomy 25:19

25:19 So when the Lord your God gives you relief from all the enemies who surround you in the land he ⁸  is giving you as an inheritance, ⁹  you must wipe out the memory of the Amalekites from under heaven ¹⁰  – do not forget! ¹¹

² tn Heb “the Lord your God.” See note on “he” in 12:5.

³ tn In the Hebrew text vv. 10-11 are one long, complex sentence. For stylistic reasons the translation divides this into two sentences.

⁴ tn The words “you must fight” are not present in the Hebrew text, but are supplied in the translation for clarity.

⁵ tn Heb “gives your brothers rest.”

⁷ tn There is some degree of paronomasia (wordplay) here: “the seventh (הַשְּׁבִיעִי, hashÿvi’i) day is the Sabbath (שַׁבָּת, shabbat).” Otherwise, the words have nothing in common, since “Sabbath” is derived from the verb שָׁבַת (shavat, “to cease”).

⁸ tn Heb “in your gates”; NRSV, CEV “in your towns”; TEV “in your country.”

¹⁰ tn Heb “ the Lord your God.” The pronoun has been used in the translation for stylistic reasons to avoid redundancy.

¹¹ tn The Hebrew text includes “to possess it.”

¹² tn Or “from beneath the sky.” The Hebrew term שָׁמַיִם (shamayim) may be translated “heaven(s)” or “sky” depending on the context.
