Deuteronomy 20:19

20:19 If you besiege a city for a long time while attempting to capture it, you must not chop down its trees, for you may eat fruit from them and should not cut them down. A tree in the field is not human that you should besiege it!

Genesis 44:30

44:30 “So now, when I return to your servant my father, and the boy is not with us – his very life is bound up in his son’s life.

Luke 12:15

12:15 Then he said to them, “Watch out and guard yourself from all types of greed, because one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”

tn Heb “to fight against it to capture it.”

tn Heb “you must not destroy its trees by chopping them with an iron” (i.e., an ax).

tn Heb “you may eat from them.” The direct object is not expressed; the word “fruit” is supplied in the translation for clarity.

tn Heb “to go before you in siege.”

tn Heb “his life is bound up in his life.”

tn Here δέ (de) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

tn See L&N 13.154 for this use of the middle voice of φυλάσσω (fulassw) in this verse.

tn Or “avarice,” “covetousness.” Note the warning covers more than money and gets at the root attitude – the strong desire to acquire more and more possessions and experiences.
