3:18 At that time I instructed you as follows: “The Lord your God has given you this land for your possession. You warriors are to cross over before your fellow Israelites ¹  equipped for battle.

13:3 You must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer, ¹⁹  for the Lord your God will be testing you to see if you love him ²⁰  with all your mind and being. ²¹

23:4 for they did not meet you with food and water on the way as you came from Egypt, and furthermore, they hired ²²  Balaam son of Beor of Pethor in Aram Naharaim to curse you.

¹ tn Heb “your brothers, the sons of Israel.”

² tn These technical Hebrew terms (חֻקִּים [khuqqim] and מִשְׁפָּטִים [mishpatim]) occur repeatedly throughout the Book of Deuteronomy to describe the covenant stipulations to which Israel had been called to subscribe (see, in this chapter alone, vv. 1, 5, 6, 8). The word חֻקִּים derives from the verb חֹק (khoq, “to inscribe; to carve”) and מִשְׁפָּטִים (mishpatim) from שָׁפַט (shafat, “to judge”). They are virtually synonymous and are used interchangeably in Deuteronomy.

³ tn Heb “fathers” (also in vv. 31, 37).
