Deuteronomy 15:10

15:10 You must by all means lend 4  to him and not be upset by doing it, 5  for because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you attempt.

17:12 The person who pays no attention 6  to the priest currently serving the Lord your God there, or to the verdict – that person must die, so that you may purge evil from Israel.

Deuteronomy 19:9

19:9 and then you are careful to observe all these commandments 7  I am giving 8  you today (namely, to love the Lord your God and to always walk in his ways), then you must add three more cities 9  to these three.

1 tn Heb “Lord Lord.” The phrase אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה (’adonay yÿhvih) is customarily rendered by Jewish tradition as “Lord God.” Cf. NIV, TEV, NLT “Sovereign Lord.”

2 tn Heb “your servant.” The pronoun is used in the translation to clarify that Moses is speaking of himself, since in contemporary English one does not usually refer to oneself in third person.

3 tn Heb “your strong hand” (so NIV), a symbol of God’s activity.

4 tn The Hebrew text uses the infinitive absolute for emphasis, which the translation indicates with “by all means.”

5 tc Heb “your heart must not be grieved in giving to him.” The LXX and Orig add, “you shall surely lend to him sufficient for his need,” a suggestion based on the same basic idea in v. 8. Such slavish adherence to stock phrases is without warrant in most cases, and certainly here.

7 tn Heb “who acts presumptuously not to listen” (cf. NASB).

10 tn Heb “all this commandment.” This refers here to the entire covenant agreement of the Book of Deuteronomy as encapsulated in the Shema (Deut 6:4-5).

11 tn Heb “commanding”; NAB “which I enjoin on you today.”

12 sn You will add three more cities. Since these are alluded to nowhere else and thus were probably never added, this must be a provision for other cities of refuge should they be needed (cf. v. 8). See P. C. Craigie, Deuteronomy (NICOT), 267.
