Exodus 20:7

20:7 “You shall not take ¹  the name of the Lord your God in vain, ²  for the Lord will not hold guiltless ³  anyone who takes his name in vain.

Exodus 37:16

37:16 He made the vessels which were on the table out of pure gold, its ⁴  plates, its ladles, its pitchers, and its bowls, to be used in pouring out offerings.

Exodus 38:27-28

38:27 The one hundred talents of silver were used for casting the bases of the sanctuary and the bases of the special curtain – one hundred bases for one hundred talents, one talent per base. 38:28 From the remaining 1,775 shekels ⁵  he made hooks for the posts, overlaid their tops, and made bands for them.

¹ tn Or “use” (NCV, TEV); NIV, CEV, NLT “misuse”; NRSV “make wrongful use of.”

² tn שָׁוְא (shav’, “vain”) describes “unreality.” The command prohibits use of the name for any idle, frivolous, or insincere purpose (S. R. Driver, Exodus, 196). This would include perjury, pagan incantations, or idle talk. The name is to be treated with reverence and respect because it is the name of the holy God.

³ tn Or “leave unpunished.”

⁴ tn The suffixes on these could also indicate the indirect object (see Exod 25:29).

⁷ tn Here the word “shekels” is understood; about 45 pounds.
