Genesis 50:11

50:11 When the Canaanites who lived in the land saw them mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a very sad occasion ¹  for the Egyptians.” That is why its name was called ²  Abel Mizraim, ³  which is beyond the Jordan.

Numbers 20:29

20:29 When all the community saw that Aaron was dead, the whole house of Israel mourned for Aaron thirty days.

Deuteronomy 34:8

34:8 The Israelites mourned for Moses in the deserts of Moab for thirty days; then the days of mourning for Moses ended.

Acts 8:2

8:2 Some ⁴  devout men buried Stephen and made loud lamentation ⁵  over him. ⁶ 

¹ tn Heb “this is heavy mourning for Egypt.”

² tn The verb has no expressed subject and so it may be translated as passive.

³ sn The name Abel Mizraim means “the mourning of Egypt.”

⁴ tn “Some” is not in the Greek text, but is implied.

⁵ sn Made loud lamentation. For someone who was stoned to death, lamentation was normally not allowed (m. Sanhedrin 6:6). The remark points to an unjust death.

⁶ tn Or “mourned greatly for him.”
