17:13 They must indeed be circumcised, ¹  whether born in your house or bought with money. The sign of my covenant ²  will be visible in your flesh as a permanent ³  reminder.

Genesis 31:37

31:37 When you searched through all my goods, did you find anything that belonged to you? ⁵  Set it here before my relatives and yours, ⁶  and let them settle the dispute between the two of us! ⁷ 

¹ tn The emphatic construction employs the Niphal imperfect tense (collective singular) and the Niphal infinitive.

² tn Heb “my covenant.” Here in v. 13 the Hebrew word בְּרִית (bÿrit) refers to the outward, visible sign, or reminder, of the covenant. For the range of meaning of the term, see the note on the word “requirement” in v. 9.

³ tn Or “an eternal.”

⁴ tn Heb “for you I see [as] godly before me in this generation.” The direct object (“you”) is placed first in the clause to give it prominence. The verb “to see” here signifies God’s evaluative discernment.

⁷ tn Heb “what did you find from all the goods of your house?”

⁸ tn Heb “your relatives.” The word “relatives” has not been repeated in the translation here for stylistic reasons.

⁹ tn Heb “that they may decide between us two.”
