21:6 Sarah said, “God has made me laugh. 1  Everyone who hears about this 2  will laugh 3  with me.”

27:7 ‘Bring me some wild game and prepare for me some tasty food. Then I will eat 4  it and bless you 5  in the presence of the Lord 6  before I die.’

3 sn Sarah’s words play on the name “Isaac” in a final triumphant manner. God prepared “laughter” (צְחֹק, ysÿkhoq ) for her, and everyone who hears about this “will laugh” (יִצְחַק, yitskhaq ) with her. The laughter now signals great joy and fulfillment, not unbelief (cf. Gen 18:12-15).

4 tn Following the imperative, the cohortative (with the prefixed conjunction) indicates purpose or result.

5 tn The cohortative, with the prefixed conjunction, also expresses logical sequence. See vv. 4, 19, 27.

6 tn In her report to Jacob, Rebekah plays down Isaac’s strong desire to bless Esau by leaving out נַפְשִׁי (nafshi, “my soul”), but by adding the phrase “in the presence of the Lord,” she stresses how serious this matter is.
