Genesis 34:12

34:12 You can make the bride price and the gift I must bring very expensive, ¹  and I’ll give ²  whatever you ask ³  of me. Just give me the young woman as my wife!”

Genesis 48:9

48:9 Joseph said to his father, “They are the ⁴  sons God has given me in this place.” His father ⁵  said, “Bring them to me so I may bless them.” ⁶ 

¹ tn Heb “Make very great upon me the bride price and gift.” The imperatives are used in a rhetorical manner. Shechem’s point is that he will pay the price, no matter how expensive it might be.

² tn The cohortative expresses Shechem’s resolve to have Dinah as his wife.

⁵ tn Heb “and he”; the referent (Joseph’s father) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
