¹ sn The question What is this dream that you had? expresses Jacob’s dismay at what he perceives to be Joseph’s audacity.

² tn Heb “Coming, will we come, I and your mother and your brothers, to bow down to you to the ground?” The verb “come” is preceded by the infinitive absolute, which lends emphasis. It is as if Jacob said, “You don’t really think we will come…to bow down…do you?”

³ tn Heb “and a small boy of old age,” meaning that he was born when his father was elderly.

⁴ tn Heb “his”; the referent (the boy just mentioned) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

⁵ tn Heb “he, only he, to his mother is left.”

⁶ sn The meaning of the name Moab is not certain. The name sounds like the Hebrew phrase “from our father” (מֵאָבִינוּ, me’avinu) which the daughters used twice (vv. 32, 34). This account is probably included in the narrative in order to portray the Moabites, who later became enemies of God’s people, in a negative light.

⁷ sn The term father in genealogical records needs to be carefully defined. It can refer to a literal father, a grandfather, a political overlord, or a founder.

⁹ tn Heb “And it was told to Tamar, saying.”

¹⁰ tn The active participle indicates the action was in progress or about to begin.

¹¹ tn Heb “his servants the physicians.”
