Joseph’s Brothers in Egypt

42:1 When Jacob heard ¹  there was grain in Egypt, he ²  said to his sons, “Why are you looking at each other?” ³ 

Genesis 50:22

50:22 Joseph lived in Egypt, along with his father’s family. ⁴  Joseph lived 110 years.

Genesis 50:26

50:26 So Joseph died at the age of 110. ⁵  After they embalmed him, his body ⁶  was placed in a coffin in Egypt.

Genesis 42:2

42:2 He then said, “Look, I hear that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy grain for us ⁷  so that we may live ⁸  and not die.” ⁹

45:13 So tell ¹⁰  my father about all my honor in Egypt and about everything you have seen. But bring my father down here quickly!” ¹¹ 

Genesis 46:27

46:27 Counting the two sons ¹²  of Joseph who were born to him in Egypt, all the people of the household of Jacob who were in Egypt numbered seventy. ¹³ 

Genesis 47:29

47:29 The time ¹⁴  for Israel to die approached, so he called for his son Joseph and said to him, “If now I have found favor in your sight, put your hand under my thigh ¹⁵  and show me kindness and faithfulness. ¹⁶  Do not bury me in Egypt,

² tn Heb “Jacob.” Here the proper name has been replaced by the pronoun (“he”) in the translation for stylistic reasons.

³ sn Why are you looking at each other? The point of Jacob’s question is that his sons should be going to get grain rather than sitting around doing nothing. Jacob, as the patriarch, still makes the decisions for the whole clan.

⁷ tn Heb “son of a hundred and ten years.”

¹⁰ tn Heb “and buy for us from there.” The word “grain,” the direct object of “buy,” has been supplied for clarity, and the words “from there” have been omitted in the translation for stylistic reasons.
