Hebrews 10:26

10:26 For if we deliberately keep on sinning after receiving the knowledge of the truth, no further sacrifice for sins is left for us,

John 17:12

17:12 When I was with them I kept them safe and watched over them in your name that you have given me. Not one of them was lost except the one destined for destruction, so that the scripture could be fulfilled.

John 17:2

17:2 just as you have given him authority over all humanity, so that he may give eternal life to everyone you have given him.

John 2:3

2:3 When the wine ran out, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no wine left.” 10

John 2:1

Turning Water into Wine

2:1 Now on the third day there was a wedding at Cana 11  in Galilee. 12  Jesus’ mother 13  was there,

John 6:9

6:9 “Here is a boy who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what good 14  are these for so many people?”

John 6:2

6:2 A large crowd was following him because they were observing the miraculous signs he was performing on the sick.

John 3:7

3:7 Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must all 15  be born from above.’ 16

Revelation 17:8

17:8 The beast you saw was, and is not, but is about to come up from the abyss 17  and then go to destruction. The 18  inhabitants of the earth – all those whose names have not been written in the book of life since the foundation of the world – will be astounded when they see that 19  the beast was, and is not, but is to come.

Revelation 17:11

17:11 The 20  beast that was, and is not, is himself an eighth king and yet is one of the seven, and is going to destruction.

tn Grk “is left,” with “for us” implied by the first half of the verse.

tn Or “I protected them”; Grk “I kept them.”

tn Grk “and guarded them.”

tn Or “by your name.”

tn Grk And not one.” The conjunction καί (kai, “and”) has not been translated here in keeping with the tendency of contemporary English style to use shorter sentences.

tn Grk “the son of destruction” (a Semitic idiom for one appointed for destruction; here it is a reference to Judas).

sn A possible allusion to Ps 41:9 or Prov 24:22 LXX. The exact passage is not specified here, but in John 13:18, Ps 41:9 is explicitly quoted by Jesus with reference to the traitor, suggesting that this is the passage to which Jesus refers here. The previous mention of Ps 41:9 in John 13:18 probably explains why the author felt no need for an explanatory parenthetical note here. It is also possible that the passage referred to here is Prov 24:22 LXX, where in the Greek text the phrase “son of destruction” appears.

tn Or “all people”; Grk “all flesh.”

tn Grk “so that to everyone whom you have given to him, he may give to them eternal life.”

10 tn The word “left” is not in the Greek text but is implied.

11 map For location see Map1-C3; Map2-D2; Map3-C5.

12 sn Cana in Galilee was not a very well-known place. It is mentioned only here, in 4:46, and 21:2, and nowhere else in the NT. Josephus (Life 16 [86]) says he once had his quarters there. The probable location is present day Khirbet Cana, 8 mi (14 km) north of Nazareth, or Khirbet Kenna, 4 mi (7 km) northeast of Nazareth.

13 tn Grk “in Galilee, and Jesus’ mother.”

14 tn Grk “but what are these”; the word “good” is not in the Greek text, but is implied.

15 tn “All” has been supplied to indicate the plural pronoun in the Greek text.

16 tn Or “born again.” The same Greek word with the same double meaning occurs in v. 3.

17 tn On this term BDAG 2 s.v. ἄβυσσος 2 states, “netherworld, abyss, esp. the abode of the dead Ro 10:7 (Ps 106:26) and of demons Lk 8:31; dungeon where the devil is kept Rv 20:3; abode of the θηρίον, the Antichrist 11:7; 17:8; of ᾿Αβαδδών (q.v.), the angel of the underworld 9:11…φρέαρ τῆς ἀ. 9:1f; capable of being sealed 9:1; 20:1, 3.”

18 tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

19 tn Some translations take the ὅτι (Joti) here as causal: “because he was, and is not, but is to come” (so NIV, NRSV), but it is much more likely that the subject of the ὅτι clause has been assimilated into the main clause: “when they see the beast, that he was…” = “when they see that the beast was” (so BDAG 732 s.v. ὅτι 1.f, where Rev 17:8 is listed).

20 tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.
