Isaiah 1:24

1:24 Therefore, the sovereign Lord who commands armies, ¹ 

the powerful ruler of Israel, ²  says this:

“Ah, I will seek vengeance ³  against my adversaries,

I will take revenge against my enemies. ⁴ 

Isaiah 36:12

36:12 But the chief adviser said, “My master did not send me to speak these words only to your master and to you. ⁵  His message is also for the men who sit on the wall, for they will eat their own excrement and drink their own urine along with you!” ⁶ 

Isaiah 51:22

51:22 This is what your sovereign master, ⁷  the Lord your God, says:

“Look, I have removed from your hand

the cup of intoxicating wine, ⁸ 

the goblet full of my anger. ⁹ 

You will no longer have to drink it.

³ tn Heb “console myself” (i.e., by getting revenge); NRSV “pour out my wrath on.”

⁴ sn The Lord here identifies with the oppressed and comes as their defender and vindicator.

⁵ tn Heb “To your master and to you did my master send me to speak these words?” The rhetorical question expects a negative answer.

⁶ tn Heb “[Is it] not [also] to the men…?” The rhetorical question expects the answer, “Yes, it is.”

⁷ tn The Hebrew term translated “sovereign master” here is אֲדֹנָי (’adonay).

⁸ tn Heb “the cup of [= that causes] staggering” (so ASV, NAB, NRSV); NASB “the cup of reeling.”
