17:13 Though these people make an uproar as loud as the roaring of powerful waves, 1
when he shouts at 2 them, they will flee to a distant land,
driven before the wind like dead weeds on the hills,
or like dead thistles 3 before a strong gale.
17:1 Here is a message about Damascus:
“Look, Damascus is no longer a city,
it is a heap of ruins!
22:17 Look, the Lord will throw you far away, 4 you mere man! 5
He will wrap you up tightly. 6
22:1 Here is a message about the Valley of Vision: 7
What is the reason 8
that all of you go up to the rooftops?
1 tn Heb “the peoples are in an uproar like the uproar of mighty waters.”
2 tn Or “rebukes.” The verb and related noun are used in theophanies of God’s battle cry which terrifies his enemies. See, for example, Pss 18:15; 76:7; 106:9; Isa 50:2; Nah 1:4, and A. Caquot, TDOT 3:49-53.
3 tn Or perhaps “tumbleweed” (NAB, NIV, CEV); KJV “like a rolling thing.”
4 tn Heb “will throw you with a throwing.”
5 tn Heb “O man” (so NASB); NAB “mortal man”; NRSV “my fellow.”
6 tn Heb “and the one who wraps you [will] wrap.”
7 sn The following message pertains to Jerusalem. The significance of referring to the city as the Valley of Vision is uncertain. Perhaps the Hinnom Valley is in view, but why it is associated with a prophetic revelatory “vision” is not entirely clear. Maybe the Hinnom Valley is called this because the destruction that will take place there is the focal point of this prophetic message (see v. 5).
8 tn Heb “What to you, then?”
