18:3 All you who live in the world,
who reside on the earth,
you will see a signal flag raised on the mountains;
you will hear a trumpet being blown.
40:3 A voice cries out,
“In the wilderness clear a way for the Lord;
construct in the desert a road for our God.
48:20 Leave Babylon!
Flee from the Babylonians!
Announce it with a shout of joy!
Make this known!
Proclaim it throughout the earth! 1
Say, ‘The Lord protects 2 his servant Jacob.
52:11 Leave! Leave! Get out of there!
Don’t touch anything unclean!
Get out of it!
Stay pure, you who carry the Lord’s holy items! 3
57:14 He says, 4
“Build it! Build it! Clear a way!
Remove all the obstacles out of the way of my people!”
1 tn Heb “to the end of the earth” (so KJV, NASB, NRSV).
2 tn Heb “redeems.” See the note at 41:14.
3 tn Heb “the vessels of the Lord” (so KJV, NAB).
4 tn Since God is speaking throughout this context, perhaps we should emend the text to “and I say.” However, divine speech is introduced in v. 15.
5 sn Heb “Yahweh-nissi” (so NAB), which means “Yahweh is my banner.” Note that when Israel murmured and failed God, the name commemorated the incident or the outcome of their failure. When they were blessed with success, the naming praised God. Here the holding up of the staff of God was preserved in the name for the altar – God gave them the victory.
6 sn A quotation from Prov 4:26. The phrase make straight paths for your feet is figurative for “stay on God’s paths.”
