Isaiah 2:11

2:11 Proud men will be brought low,

arrogant men will be humiliated;

the Lord alone will be exalted

in that day.

Isaiah 2:20

2:20 At that time men will throw

their silver and gold idols,

which they made for themselves to worship,

into the caves where rodents and bats live,

Isaiah 12:1

12:1 At that time you will say:

“I praise you, O Lord,

for even though you were angry with me,

your anger subsided, and you consoled me.

Isaiah 24:21-23

The Lord Will Become King

24:21 At that time the Lord will punish

the heavenly forces in the heavens

and the earthly kings on the earth.

24:22 They will be imprisoned in a pit, 10

locked up in a prison,

and after staying there for a long time, 11  they will be punished. 12

24:23 The full moon will be covered up, 13

the bright sun 14  will be darkened; 15

for the Lord who commands armies will rule 16

on Mount Zion in Jerusalem 17

in the presence of his assembly, in majestic splendor. 18

Isaiah 25:9

25:9 At that time they will say, 19

“Look, here 20  is our God!

We waited for him and he delivered us.

Here 21  is the Lord! We waited for him.

Let’s rejoice and celebrate his deliverance!”

tn Heb “and the eyes of the pride of men will be brought low, and the arrogance of men will be brought down.” The repetition of the verbs שָׁפַל (shafal) and שָׁחָח (shakhakh) from v. 9 draws attention to the appropriate nature of the judgment. Those proud men who “bow low” before idols will be forced to “bow low” before God when he judges their sin.

tn Or “elevated”; CEV “honored.”

tn Or “in that day” (KJV).

tn Or “bow down to.”

tn Heb “to the shrews and to the bats.” On the meaning of חֲפַרְפָּרָה (khafarparah, “shrew”), see HALOT 341 s.v. חֲפַרְפָּרָה. The BHS text as it stands (לַחְפֹּר פֵּרוֹת, perot lakhpor), makes no sense. Based on Theodotion’s transliteration and a similar reading in the Qumran scroll 1QIsaa, most scholars suggest that the MT mistakenly divided a noun (a hapax legomenon) that should be translated “moles,” “shrews,” or “rodents.”

tn Or “in that day” (KJV).

tn Or “in that day” (so KJV). The verb that introduces this verse serves as a discourse particle and is untranslated; see note on “in the future” in 2:2.

tn Heb “visit [in judgment].”

tn Heb “the host of the height in the height.” The “host of the height/heaven” refers to the heavenly luminaries (stars and planets, see, among others, Deut 4:19; 17:3; 2 Kgs 17:16; 21:3, 5; 23:4-5; 2 Chr 33:3, 5) that populate the divine/heavenly assembly in mythological and prescientific Israelite thought (see Job 38:7; Isa 14:13).

10 tn Heb “they will be gathered [in] a gathering [as] a prisoner in a cistern.” It is tempting to eliminate אֲסֵפָה (’asefah, “a gathering”) as dittographic or as a gloss, but sound repetition is one of the main characteristics of the style of this section of the chapter.

11 tn Heb “and after a multitude of days.”

12 tn Heb “visited” (so KJV, ASV). This verse can mean to visit for good or for evil. The translation assumes the latter, based on v. 21a. However, BDB 823 s.v. פָּקַד B.Niph.2 suggests the meaning “visit graciously” here, in which case one might translate “they will be released.”

13 tn Heb “will be ashamed.”

14 tn Or “glow of the sun.”

15 tn Heb “will be ashamed” (so NCV).

16 tn Or “take his throne,” “become king.”

18 tn Heb “and before his elders [in] splendor.”

19 tn Heb “and one will say in that day.”

20 tn Heb “this [one].”

21 tn Heb “this [one].”
