Isaiah 27:11

27:11 When its branches get brittle, ¹  they break;

women come and use them for kindling. ² 

For these people lack understanding, ³ 

therefore the one who made them has no compassion on them;

the one who formed them has no mercy on them.

Luke 16:25-26

16:25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, ⁴  remember that in your lifetime you received your good things and Lazarus likewise bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in anguish. ⁵  16:26 Besides all this, ⁶  a great chasm ⁷  has been fixed between us, ⁸  so that those who want to cross over from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us.’

¹ tn Heb “are dry” (so NASB, NIV, NRSV).

² tn Heb “women come [and] light it.” The city is likened to a dead tree with dried up branches that is only good for firewood.

³ tn Heb “for not a people of understanding [is] he.”

⁴ tn The Greek term here is τέκνον (teknon), which could be understood as a term of endearment.

⁵ tn Or “in terrible pain” (L&N 24.92). Here is the reversal Jesus mentioned in Luke 6:20-26.
