Isaiah 28:21

28:21 For the Lord will rise up, as he did at Mount Perazim, ¹ 

he will rouse himself, as he did in the Valley of Gibeon, ² 

to accomplish his work,

his peculiar work,

to perform his task,

his strange task. ³ 

Ezekiel 18:32

18:32 For I take no delight in the death of anyone, ⁴  declares the sovereign Lord. Repent and live!

Ezekiel 33:11

33:11 Say to them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but prefer that the wicked change his behavior ⁵  and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil deeds! ⁶  Why should you die, O house of Israel?’

Hebrews 12:9-10

12:9 Besides, we have experienced discipline from ⁷  our earthly fathers ⁸  and we respected them; shall we not submit ourselves all the more to the Father of spirits and receive life? ⁹  12:10 For they disciplined us for a little while as seemed good to them, but he does so for our benefit, that we may share his holiness.

¹ sn This probably alludes to David’s victory over the Philistines at Baal Perazim. See 2 Sam 5:20.

² sn This probably alludes to the Lord’s victory over the Canaanites at Gibeon, during the days of Joshua. See Josh 10:10-11.

³ sn God’s judgment of his own people is called “his peculiar work” and “his strange task,” because he must deal with them the way he treated their enemies in the past.

⁴ tn Heb “the death of the one dying.”

⁷ tn Heb “turn from his way.”

⁸ tn Heb “ways.” This same word is translated “behavior” earlier in the verse.

¹⁰ tn Grk “we had our earthly fathers as discipliners.”
