3:5 The people will treat each other harshly;
men will oppose each other;
neighbors will fight. 1
Youths will proudly defy the elderly
and riffraff will challenge those who were once respected. 2
13:18 Their arrows will cut young men to ribbons; 3
they have no compassion on a person’s offspring, 4
they will not 5 look with pity on children.
1 tn Heb “man against man, and a man against his neighbor.”
2 tn Heb “and those lightly esteemed those who are respected.” The verb רָהַב (rahav) does double duty in the parallelism.
3 tn Heb “and bows cut to bits young men.” “Bows” stands by metonymy for arrows.
4 tn Heb “the fruit of the womb.”
5 tn Heb “their eye does not.” Here “eye” is a metonymy for the whole person.
