5:16 The Lord who commands armies will be exalted 1 when he punishes, 2
the sovereign God’s authority will be recognized when he judges. 3
12:4 At that time 4 you will say:
“Praise the Lord!
Ask him for help! 5
Publicize his mighty acts among the nations!
Make it known that he is unique! 6
9:24 If people want to boast, they should boast about this:
They should boast that they understand and know me.
They should boast that they know and understand
that I, the Lord, act out of faithfulness, fairness, and justice in the earth
and that I desire people to do these things,” 7
says the Lord.
9:1 (8:23) 8 I wish that my head were a well full of water 9
and my eyes were a fountain full of tears!
If they were, I could cry day and night
for those of my dear people 10 who have been killed.
1:17 He himself is before all things and all things are held together 17 in him.
1 tn Or “elevated”; TEV “the Lord Almighty shows his greatness.”
2 tn Heb “by judgment/justice.” When God justly punishes the evildoers denounced in the preceding verses, he will be recognized as a mighty warrior.
3 tn Heb “The holy God will be set apart by fairness.” In this context God’s holiness is his sovereign royal authority, which implies a commitment to justice (see the note on the phrase “the sovereign king of Israel” in 1:4). When God judges evildoers as they deserve, his sovereignty will be acknowledged.
4 tn Or “in that day” (KJV).
5 tn Heb “call in his name,” i.e., “invoke his name.”
6 tn Heb “bring to remembrance that his name is exalted.” The Lord’s “name” stands here for his character and reputation.
7 tn Or “fairness and justice, because these things give me pleasure.” Verse 24 reads in Hebrew, “But let the one who brags brag in this: understanding and knowing me that I, the
8 sn Beginning with 9:1, the verse numbers through 9:26 in the English Bible differ from the verse numbers in the Hebrew text (BHS), with 9:1 ET = 8:23 HT, 9:2 ET = 9:1 HT, 9:3 ET = 9:2 HT, etc., through 9:26 ET = 9:25 HT. Beginning with 10:1 the verse numbers in the ET and HT are again the same.
9 tn Heb “I wish that my head were water.”
10 tn Heb “daughter of my people.” For the translation given here see 4:11 and the note on the phrase “dear people” there.
11 tn The Greek phrase εἴς ὅ (eis Jo, “toward which”) implies “movement toward a goal” and has been rendered by the English phrase “Toward this goal.”
12 tn The prepositional phrase ἐν δυνάμει (en dunamei) seems to be functioning adverbially, related to the participle, and has therefore been translated “powerfully.”
13 tn Grk “and faithful.” The construction in Greek (as well as Paul’s style) suggests that the saints are identical to the faithful; hence, the καί (kai) is best left untranslated (cf. Eph 1:1). See ExSyn 281-82.
14 tn Grk “brothers,” but the Greek word may be used for “brothers and sisters” or “fellow Christians” as here (cf. BDAG 18 s.v. ἀδελφός 1, where considerable nonbiblical evidence for the plural ἀδελφοί [adelfoi] meaning “brothers and sisters” is cited).
15 tn Or “Grace to you and peace.”
16 tc Most witnesses, including some important ones (א A C F G I [P] 075 Ï it bo), read “and the Lord Jesus Christ” at the end of this verse, no doubt to conform the wording to the typical Pauline salutation. However, excellent and early witnesses (B D K L Ψ 33 81 1175 1505 1739 1881 al sa) lack this phrase. Since the omission is inexplicable as arising from the longer reading (otherwise, these
17 tn BDAG 973 s.v. συνίστημι B.3 suggests “continue, endure, exist, hold together” here.
