60:21 All of your people will be godly; 1
they will possess the land permanently.
I will plant them like a shoot;
they will be the product of my labor,
through whom I reveal my splendor. 2
28:1 “If you indeed 11 obey the Lord your God and are careful to observe all his commandments I am giving 12 you today, the Lord your God will elevate you above all the nations of the earth.
1 tn Or “righteous” (NASB, NIV, NRSV, NLT); NAB “just.”
2 tn Heb “a shoot of his planting, the work of my hands, to reveal splendor.”
3 tn That is, “set apart.”
4 tn Heb “the
5 tn Or “treasured” (so NIV, NRSV); NLT “his own special treasure.” The Hebrew term סְגֻלָּה (sÿgullah) describes Israel as God’s choice people, those whom he elected and who are most precious to him (cf. Exod 19:4-6; Deut 14:2; 26:18; 1 Chr 29:3; Ps 135:4; Eccl 2:8 Mal 3:17). See E. Carpenter, NIDOTTE 3:224.
6 tn Heb “so that.” Verses 18-19 are one sentence in the Hebrew text, but the translation divides it into three sentences for stylistic reasons. The first clause in verse 19 gives a result of the preceding clause. When Israel keeps God’s law, God will bless them with fame and honor (cf. NAB “he will then raise you high in praise and renown and glory”; NLT “And if you do, he will make you greater than any other nation”).
7 tn Heb “for praise and for a name and for glory.”
8 tn Heb “and to be.” A new sentence was started here for stylistic reasons.
9 tn Heb “the commandments of the
10 tn Heb “and walk in his ways” (so NAB, NASB, NIV, NRSV, NLT).
11 tn The Hebrew text uses the infinitive absolute for emphasis, which the translation indicates with “indeed.”
12 tn Heb “commanding”; NAB “which I enjoin on you today” (likewise in v. 15).
13 sn Ar was a Moabite city on the Arnon River east of the Dead Sea. It is mentioned elsewhere in the “Book of the Wars of Yahweh” (Num 21:15; cf. 21:28; Isa 15:1). Here it is synonymous with the whole land of Moab.
14 sn The descendants of Lot. Following the destruction of the cities of the plain, Sodom and Gomorrah, as God’s judgment, Lot fathered two sons by his two daughters, namely, Moab and Ammon (Gen 19:30-38). Thus, these descendants of Lot in and around Ar were the Moabites.
