16:23 The rulers of the Philistines gathered to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god and to celebrate. They said, “Our god has handed Samson, our enemy, over to us.”
1 tn Heb “and he gathered to him.”
2 tc The translation assumes that the form in the Hebrew text (מֻצָּב, mutsav) is a corruption of an original מַצֵּבָה (matsevah, “pillar”). The reference is probably to a pagan object of worship (cf. LXX).
3 tn Heb “Sihon.” The proper name (“Sihon”) has been replaced in the translation by the pronoun (“he”) because of English style; a repetition of the proper name here would be redundant in English.
4 tn Heb “all his people” (also in the following verse).
4 tn Heb “bitter in spirit.” This phrase is used in 2 Sam 17:8 of David and his warriors, who are compared to a bear robbed of her cubs.
5 tn Heb “and you will gather up your life and the life of your house.”
5 tn Heb “they turned aside there to enter to spend the night.”
6 tn Heb “and he entered and sat down, and there was no one receiving them into the house to spend the night.”
