6:15 Gideon ¹  said to him, “But Lord, ²  how ³  can I deliver Israel? Just look! My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my family.” ⁴

9:9 But the olive tree said to them, ‘I am not going to stop producing my oil, which is used to honor gods and men, just to sway above the other trees!’ ⁵ 

Judges 15:12

15:12 They said to him, “We have come down to take you prisoner so we can hand you over to the Philistines.” Samson said to them, “Promise me ⁶  you will not kill ⁷  me.”

Judges 16:10

16:10 Delilah said to Samson, “Look, you deceived ⁸  me and told me lies! Now tell me how you can be subdued.”

¹ tn Heb “he”; the referent (Gideon) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

² tn Note the switch to אֲדֹנָי (’adonay, “Lord”). Gideon seems aware that he is speaking to someone other than, and superior to, the messenger, whom he addressed as אֲדֹנִי (’adoniy, “my lord”) in v. 13.

³ tn Heb “with what.”

⁴ tn Heb “in my father’s house.”

⁵ tn Heb “Should I stop my abundance, with which they honor gods and men, and go to sway over the trees?” The negative sentence in the translation reflects the force of the rhetorical question.

⁹ tn Or “swear to me.”

¹⁰ tn Heb “meet [with hostility]”; “harm.” In light of v. 13, “kill” is an appropriate translation.
