31:12 They will come and shout for joy on Mount Zion.
They will be radiant with joy 1 over the good things the Lord provides,
the grain, the fresh wine, the olive oil,
the young sheep and calves he has given to them.
They will be like a well-watered garden
and will not grow faint or weary any more.
28:25 “‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: When I regather the house of Israel from the peoples where they are dispersed, I will reveal my sovereign power 2 over them in the sight of the nations, and they will live in their land that I gave to my servant Jacob.
36:33 “‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: In the day I cleanse you from all your sins, I will populate the cities and the ruins will be rebuilt. 36:34 The desolate land will be plowed, instead of being desolate in the sight of everyone who passes by.
9:14 I will bring back my people, Israel; 3
they will rebuild the cities lying in rubble 4 and settle down. 5
They will plant vineyards and drink the wine they produce; 6
they will grow orchards 7 and eat the fruit they produce. 8
9:15 I will plant them on their land
and they will never again be uprooted from the 9 land I have given them,”
says the Lord your God.
1:17 But on Mount Zion there will be a remnant of those who escape, 10
and it will be a holy place once again.
The descendants 11 of Jacob will conquer 12
those who had conquered them. 13
1 tn Reading a Qal perfect from the root II נָהַר (nahar; so KBL 509 s.v. and HALOT 639 s.v.) rather than I נָהַר (so BDB 625 s.v.).
2 tn Or “reveal my holiness.” See verse 22.
3 tn This line can also be translated “I will restore the fortunes of my people, Israel” and is a common idiom (e.g., Deut 30:3; Jer 30:3; Hos 6:11; Zeph 3:20). This rendering is followed by several modern English versions (e.g., NEB, NRSV, NJPS).
4 tn Or “the ruined [or “desolate”] cities.”
5 tn Or “and live [in them].”
6 tn Heb “drink their wine.”
7 tn Or “gardens.”
8 tn Heb “eat their fruit.”
9 tn Heb “their.” The pronoun was replaced by the English definite article in the translation for stylistic reasons.
10 tn Heb “will be a fugitive.” This is a collective singular. Cf. NCV “some will escape the judgment.”
11 tn Heb “house” (so most English versions); NCV, TEV “the people of Jacob.” The word “house” also occurs four times in v. 18.
12 tn Heb “dispossess.” This root is repeated in the following line to emphasize poetic justice: The punishment will fit the crime.
13 tc The present translation follows the reading מוֹרִשֵׁיהֶם (morishehem; literally, “those dispossessing them”; cf. NAB, NRSV, CEV) rather than מוֹרָשֵׁיהֶם (morashehem, “their possessions”) of the MT (cf. LXX, Syriac, and Vg, followed by KJV, ASV, NASB).
